William (Bill) Gerard Ahlborn, Sr., 94, died peacefully on August 7, 2023.
Born in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of Anna and Fred Ahlborn.
Bill served as a PFC in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Pirmasens, Germany, during the Korean War. Bill married his childhood sweetheart, Theresa, in August of 1953 and they were married for nearly 67 years, raising five amazing children.
After living in Brooklyn, NY, he moved his family to Somerville and continued his work at Bell Labs where he loved his job for 43 years, working in the Satellite Communications and Signal Processing Department in Holmdel, NJ. In 1990 he was awarded a shared patent for Waveguide to Microstrip Transition. He retired in 1995.
Bill was a dedicated parishioner for over 60 years, much of it spent as an usher during Mass at Immaculate Conception Church. He helped at bingo and participated in church variety show productions. He volunteered and camped with the Boy Scouts and coached his sons in CYO basketball and Little-League baseball. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for over 50 years.
Bill was a master handyman with the innate skill to fix just about anything; houses, cars, electronics and appliances. He could build a stereo amp from scratch as well as the speakers to go with it. He was an avid reader and history buff and had fun building and fixing birdhouses. Each year Bill and his wife would take their children to a bungalow in upstate NY for a summer vacation.
Bill is survived by his sister, Carol Dalton; his son William, Jr. and his wife, Leslie; his son Michael; daughters Mary Jane Brophy and her husband, Bill, Dorothy Gonzalez and her husband, Bill; his daughter in law, Linda; as well as grandchildren, Melissa, Daniel, Elizabeth and her husband, Krzysztof. He was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, and son James.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00PM on August 11, 2023 at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00AM on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 8:00AM
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.
