Dr. Victor J. Bauer, 90, a resident of Bridgewater since 1972, died on July 13, 2025.


The son of the late Victor and Ottilie Bauer of White Plains and Lake Secor, NY, he graduated from White Plains High School, was a scholarship student at MIT (SB, Theta Delta Chi fraternity), a National Science Fellow at the Univ of Wisconsin (PhD, Phi Lambda Upsilon), and a Research Fellow at Harvard (mentored by Nobel Laureate R. B. Woodward).


Dr. Bauer was predeceased by his wife of 64 years Sonia W. Bauer and their son Steven E. Bauer, and is survived by daughter Katherine B. Giardina (husband John) of Somerville, granddaughter Teresa G. Keiser (husband Rob) of Cranford, grandson Alex Giardina of Branchburg, and great grandson Robby Keiser.


Dr. Bauer began a 50 year career in the pharmaceutical industry as a research chemist at Lederle Laboratories, Pearl River, NY, and then entered management at Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals, Bridgewater, NJ as Director Medicinal Chemistry Research, Vice President Operations, Executive Vice President/COO, and President. After retirement in 1992, he served as a consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry, a director of several start-up pharmaceutical companies, and with former colleagues was a cofounder, Chief Scientific Officer, and President of Concordia Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Bauer was the author of some 45 peer reviewed scientific papers based upon his research in synthetic organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and medicinal chemistry, and was awarded some 40 US Patents.


Dr. Bauer was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, serving as Lector Mass


Dr. Bauer was an avid musician. An accomplished amateur violist, he performed regularly with the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and Hunterdon Symphony Orchestra, and with several string trios and quartets. He served as a Life Trustee of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.


Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1890 Washington Valley Road, Martinsville. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:00 AM.


Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 145 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge.
