Thomas G. “Sonny” Dallessio
1923-2014
Somerville

Sonny left this world on June 3 surrounded by his family. He was a lifelong resident of Somerville where he had a Tavern for over 50 years.

Born in Coney Island, NY, he moved with his parents and 4 sisters to Somerville in 1926. Sonny graduated Somerville High School, earning varsity letters in baseball and basketball, and was drafted into the Army during World War II. He pitched for a period on the Army Baseball Team and was educated at what is now known as Auburn University. He joined the infantry and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He received 2 Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for his service.

Upon his return, Sonny operated Jerry’s Tavern in town until retiring in 1995. He married Mary Louise Scannicchio and cherished their 52 years together. She preceded him in death in 2010. They had 3 sons Frank, Tom and Joe, 3 daughters-in-law Kelly, Kathy and Elizabeth, and 6 grandchildren Samantha, Shelby, Nikki, Jack, Alex and Andy.

Sonny had a passion for baseball and was a lifetime Brooklyn Dodgers fan. He also loved to take his family on Sundays for drives and breakfast. Each summer, Sonny would take his family to Long Beach Island for two weeks of rest and relaxation. In later years, he and Mary traveled and visited Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and theMediterranean. On the majority of his trips he always ran into someone he knew.

He was a lifetime member of the Elks and Eagles, a member the American Legion Post 12, and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Parish. He served the community by being a frequent blood donor.

In addition to his sons and grandchildren, Sonny is survived by his two sisters, Frances Dallessio and Jean Lucas, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Rafaella, and his siblingsMary Dallessio and Ann Macchi, whom he loved very much. All of us will miss his smile.

Visiting hours will be on Thursday, June 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm at the Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 6, at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church with interment to follow at Sacred Heard Cemetery in Hillsborough.
