Steven J. Kopil, Jr., 91, departed this life peacefully on October 11, 2022.
Born in Bayonne to the late Steven Sr. and Veronica Kopil (nee Nemcik), he was a graduate of Bayonne High School.
He started working for Saybolt Inc., where he retired as the National Director of Calibration in 1990 after dedicating 46 years of service to the company.
He met the love of his life, Joan, in 1958 when Divine timing set them both as godparents to mutual friends’ baby. Joan and Steve were married in 1961 and lived in Plainfield before settling in Bridgewater in 1962. After raising their family, they moved to Hillsborough where they created their dream home which they enjoyed together for many years.
He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Somerville where he was involved in the church community serving as one of the initial Lay Eucharistic Ministers. He was active in the Holy Name Society and took great pleasure in volunteering his time at Bingo. In his later years he and Joan enjoyed participating in their Bible Study Group and Martha Ministry.
He was an avid New York Giants football fan and was always a Bayonne boy at heart. He liked to say “Nothing bad ever happens in Bayonne”. He enjoyed working in the yard with his wife, riding his tractor and especially time with his family. Steve was known for his sense of humor and ability to light up a room and get everyone laughing. He was good natured with a gentle heart, kind spirit and always made sure to say “I love you”. Everyone enjoyed being in his company.
He was preceded in death by his sister Madeline (nee Baron), and brother John, and niece Janet (nee Winkler).
Surviving are his beloved wife of 61 years, Joan Kopil (Damms), his loving daughters, MaryBeth Jordan and husband John and Melissa Beeck and husband Michael, his cherished grandchildren, Zachariah, Noah, Derrek and fiancé Grace, and Dominique, sisters, Loretta Sullivan (husband James) and Diane Snyder (husband Harold) as well as his nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.,
