Bridgewater
Sophie A. Barszczewski, 100, died peacefully on June 25, 2026.
Born and raised in Newark to the late Joseph and Anna Kilian (nee Boronski), she was a graduate of East Side High School, Newark. She met the love of her life, Peter Barszczewski, and the two were married on October 1, 1949, and began their life together.
Sophie worked as an administrative assistant in telecommunications for PSE&G in Newark for over forty years.
The Barszczewski’s settled in Bridgewater in 1954, where they lived out the rest of their lives. During their retirement, they purchased a home in Cape Coral, Florida, where they enjoyed escaping the harsh Jersey winters. They traveled the world together and enjoyed creating memories to last a lifetime.
Sophie was an avid reader and had a talent for painting. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and active in parish life for decades. Sophie was a dedicated volunteer at The Shrine of the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament in Raritan. For decades she provided critical support doing office work, washing and changing altar linens, stocking candles, and everything in between. Sophie spent countless hours during the week in Adoration and at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Her commitment to the church will resonate for years to come.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband Peter in 2016, her two brothers Henry and Joseph, four sister Stephanie, Veronica, Mildred, and Jean, two nephews Joseph and Alan Bogdziewicz, and niece Joanann Milko who welcomed her home.
Surviving are her loving nieces and nephew, Linda Mechnick, Patricia Sujkowski and her husband Richard, and Kenneth Kmiec; her cherished great-nieces and nephew Andrea, Kristen, Ember, Parrish, and Alan; her great-great nieces and nephew Ella, Avery, Kirra, Alina, and Alan, as well as her many extended family.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Shrine Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, 50 W. Somerset Street, Raritan.
