Sigmund Mitchell Gurnick, "Ziggy", 76, died peacefully on August 19, 2023.
Born in Miami, Florida, to the late Walter and Helen Gurnick, nee Vorbosky, he was raised in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School.
He went on to serve his country in the United States Army in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1970. Mr. Gurnick attended Stockton University where he graduated with a business degree.
Ziggy was the former owner of Menage Café in Woodbridge, and First Place Restaurant in Bridgewater. He was also the maître d at Vincenzo’s Ristorante before spending the rest of his career as a Property Manager with Pizzo & Pizzo, managing Primrose Place of Ocean.
He was a parishioner at The Church of The Immaculate Conception where he was a former usher. Ziggy enjoyed going on trips with Kenny, Debbie, and Carmen, golfing with his son Evan, and fishing with his cousin Charlie. He spent his time playing cards with friends and family, traveling to see loved ones, and most of all was a devoted father who loved his children and grandchildren. His intelligence always led to meaningful conversation and advice. His sense of style shined as bright as his sense of humor, and both always lit up a room.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Sigmund R. Gurnick, “Ziggy” in 2009.
Surviving are his devoted sister, Mary Ann Gurnick, his loving children Evan Gurnick his partner Cassie Kowalchuk and their son Ziggy, and Natasha Coffey and her children Brianna, Nicholas, and Alexis, as well as his many extended family, colleagues, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 5:00PM on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Monday, August 28, 2023 at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM.
Entombment will follow at St. Bernard Mausoleum, Bridgewater.
