Sally Runyon

February 15, 1945 — November 28, 2023

Sally Runyon, 78, died peacefully on November 28, 2023.

Born in Hackensack to the late James and Geraldine Sutphen, she was raised in Harrington Park and was a graduate of Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan, where she sang in the choir and was a majorette. She went on to attend Drew University in Madison where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in political science. She met her former husband John, and they settled in East Brunswick where she raised their family and resided most of her life. Sally was considered a trailblazer for businesswomen, featured in the New York Times in the 1970s for having a career and a family at home. Sally spent most of her career in Human Resource Management and retired in 2008.

Sally was a woman of strong faith, dedicating herself to serving first at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Spotswood and later North Branch Reformed Church in Branchburg. She enjoyed singing in the choir and building the church community over the years.

Sally moved to Somerville in 2009 to help care for her grandchildren. Her love of music and natural talent for singing was passed on to her grandson Logan, and she enjoyed watching him perform. Sally never missed the chance to be her grandson Wyatt’s biggest fan at his football and baseball games. She enjoyed the time spent caring for them, supporting their dreams, and the memories they created together. Whether it was trips to Disney or just making cookies at home, Sally loved being a “Grandma”.

Sally was preceded in death by her former husband, John Runyon.

Surviving are her loving daughter, Erica Ebersole and husband Sean and her cherished grandsons Logan and Wyatt. Sally is also survived by her "bonus" grandson, Tyler Ebersole.

Sally is also survived by her sisters Sandra Sutphen and Susan Shultis along with Susan’s husband Donald and their children Karen Scott, Keith Shultis and Kevin Shultis and their families.
