Salvatino “Sal” Barbati died Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at his home in Bridgewater, where he and his wife, Lillian, have lived for over 60 years.

Sal was born in Bound Brook and graduated from Bound Brook High School before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. He served aboard several ships in the South Pacific during World War II, including the SS Sheliak at the Battle of Okinawa.

An animal lover and a loyal fan of the New York Mets, Sal worked at Union Carbide Company, in Piscataway, for over 40 years. He subscribed to the Courier News for decades, and began every day by reading the newspaper.

For over 60 years, Sal attended Immaculate Conception Church, in Somerville, where he served as an usher for many years. He also served for many years as president of the senior citizens Leisure Club at St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, in Bound Brook.

He was predeceased by his sister, Josephine. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian (Bracha), by his son, Carl, daughter-in-law, Sally, brothers Felix and Anthony, and sister Theresa.

Visitation is Friday, Aug. 22, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Cusick Funeral Home, in Somerville. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway.
