Robert “Bob” Charles Nittolo, 82, died peacefully on August 23, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born in Orange, New Jersey to the late Charles and Gilda Nittolo (née Serino). Bob graduated from Our Lady of the Valley High School, where he was a star varsity basketball player. Bob went on to play basketball for Seton Hall University, where he graduated with a BBA in 1964. After graduating, he transitioned into a successful career at Chubb & Son as a claims manager in the East Regional Claims Department. He was with the company for thirty-one years before retiring in 1997.
Even though he was a claims manager, his true passion since high school was the Revolutionary War, as a historian and eventual collector of antique pieces. As a child, he visited Fort Ticonderoga and was fascinated with the complex history he witnessed. Bob spent a lifetime traveling and collecting more than 3,000 objects to amass his truly remarkable collection. With many accolades and accomplishments in his field, Bob was approached by the board of directors at Fort Ticonderoga to procure his incredible collection. In 2022, after many deliberations, Bob returned his exquisite pieces to the original hallowed grounds of Fort Ticonderoga. This acquisition by Fort Ticonderoga has been transformative to their revered museum and will continue to educate the future generations of Americans on the rich history of the Revolutionary War. To that end, Bob co-authored British Military Long Arms in Colonial America and contributed to many other books in his field.
Bob was married to the late Eileen McArdle, who was the mother of his three oldest children, Laurie Nittolo-Macey (Edward), Anthony Nittolo (Rebecca), Danielle Nittolo (Anne). In 1986, he married Kathleen “Kate” Vogel Nittolo and had a daughter, Alyssa Nittolo-Harris (Hezekiah). Bob is also a grandfather to Alexandra Davis (Jacob), Alyson and Harper Harris and great-grandfather to James and Liam Davis.
Bob was an outgoing spirit whose intelligence, humor and boisterous laugh would fill any room he was in with love and laughter. He was the life of the party who was always ready to tell a funny story. Bob was also an enthusiastic sports fan who intensely followed the New York Yankees and UConn Women’s Basketball for years. He loved keeping a beautiful garden and freshly manicured lawn. Even with all of these passions and interests, his biggest devotion and dedication was the quality time spent with his family. Bob always loved having his family around, delighting in seeing his children and his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his dear uncle Alfred Serino, and the mother of his three oldest children. Surviving are his beloved wife, his loving children, his adored grandchildren and his dear great-grandchildren, as well as his extended family and friends.
