Richard Henry Van Ness

June 26, 1962 — April 14, 2025

Richard Henry Van Ness, 62, died on April 14, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Somerville to Harry and Claretha (Robinson) Van Ness where he remained a lifelong resident.

Richard worked for Somerset County Roads and Bridge Division, and after 29 years of service retired in November of 2024.


Richard was a coach for many years with Somerville Baseball which he truly enjoyed. Richard was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Milwaukee Bucks, and both the New York Yankees and Mets. He also followed college sports, particularly the UNC Tarheels. He was a quiet, kind and peaceful man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as the upkeep of his yard, especially his flowers. Above all Richard loved his family and friends dearly. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He was predeceased by his mother Claretha (Robinson) Van Ness, father Harry Van Ness, and brother Kenneth Van Ness.


Surviving are his wife Lori Van Ness, son Donald Emanuel Jr, granddaughter Cassidy Emanuel. Brothers Larry Robinson, Glenn Robinson (Theresa) and Marc Van Ness. As well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard also leaves his fiercely loyal German Shepherd Lincoln.


Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00PM on Monday, April 21, 2025 at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.


Family and friends are welcome to gather from 9:00 to 11:00AM on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 with reflections at 11:00AM at the funeral home.


Interment will follow at New Cemetery, Somerville.
