Richard Joseph Meene, Sr. 70, died peacefully on May 17, 2022, at his home. Born in Plainfield to the late Richard and Mary Meene (nee Miklovic), he was raised in Green Brook, and attended Immaculata High School in Somerville where he played varsity basketball and completed the Marine youth physical fitness challenge. He was an alumnus of Seton Hall University where he belonged to the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity where he was affectionately known as “Mungo” to his fraternity brothers. He was also a proud member of the Middlesex, NJ chapter of the Elks. After graduation, he went on to marry the love of his life, Barbara Colligan in 1976. They settled into his childhood home in Green Brook where they raised their family and resided until 2020 when they moved to Somerville. Mr. Meene owned and operated Richard Meene and Son Construction. The “and Son” part came after he passed on his lifelong dedication to his craft, and Rich and his son Rich Jr. spent many years together doing general contracting and renovation. Rich was known for his skillset and hard work, working as long as he possibly could, even in the face of illness. He was a dedicated Seton Hall basketball fan and season ticket holder. Rich was a pilot and an outdoorsman. He enjoyed all fishing, especially deep-sea fishing on their several generations of Boston Whaler boats and his prized craft the “Aquasition”, a 40ft. walkaround fishing vessel. Rich also enjoyed hunting, gardening, and skiing. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed the quality time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Mary Meene and his in-laws Claude and Marcella Colligan. Surviving are his beloved wife of 46 years, Barbara Meene, his loving children Richard Jr. and wife Miranda, and Jessica Kucsera, his cherished grandchildren, Lucille, Charlotte, Richard III (R.J.), and Augustine, his dear sister Marion Meene, his loyal companion dog Rosie, as well as his extended family and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30AM on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
