Richard "Dick" U. Niedt

August 24, 1931 — January 17, 2025

Richard U. ”Dick” Niedt died peacefully on January 17, 2025 at his home in Hillsborough Township, N.J. He was 93.

Born in Trenton, N.J. to the late Constantine and Katherine Niedt (nee Zahler), Dick was a graduate of Hamilton High School. Dick went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy, and while stationed in Memphis, Tenn., he met the love of his life, Bettye Louise Deaton. He won her heart and the two were married in 1951. They lived in Memphis and nearby West Memphis, Ark., where Dick worked as a debt collector and other jobs. They moved back to the Trenton area, eventually settling in Ewing where they raised their family. In the late 1950s, Dick started his own business, Dick Niedt Sun Service, a busy service station in Ewingville that won numerous awards for productivity and cleanliness from the Sun Oil Co. of Philadelphia. Dick Niedt Sun Service was sometimes a community gathering spot and always a community connection. Dick’s service station sponsored youth sports teams and other activities. Dick operated Niedt’s Sunoco until the late 1990s when he retired and leased out the business.

Dick was on the board of directors of Mercer Mutual Insurance Co. and to stay busy in retirement, worked part-time as a driver for Coleman Buick. Dick was deeply religious, baptized in the Lutheran church and devoted first to St. Bartholemew’s Lutheran Church in Trenton. In the 1960s, Dick and his family were founding members of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Ewing. Dick was also a lifelong Mason, where he was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge #28 in Bordentown since 1953. He was also a member of Tall Cedars and Shriners. He was also a member of the Elks and Kiwanis.

Dick was a lifelong NASCAR fan, cheering on Dale Earnhart and Dale Earnhart Jr. Dick enjoyed watching the PGA, and proudly cut ties with the Philadelphia Eagles to side with the Washington Redskins (Commanders), much to the consternation of his children and grandchildren. That’s OK. All was forgiven “and-all-like-that-there,” his signature catchphrase.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Without fail, he always had “ice cream money” in his pocket to hand to the grandkids, and there was always cold beer in his fridge for the adults and a healthy stash of candy in the multiple candy jars he kept filled.

In his later years, Dick enjoyed watching old television shows, including “Gunsmoke” and “The Rockford Files.” Images of his Siberian Husky, Lady Dog, were by his recliner as he watched TV.

Dick was preceded in death by his cherished son, Randy Niedt, in 2008, and his dear sister Constance “Connie” Chester.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Bettye L. Niedt; his loving children Richard L. Niedt and wife Susan; Robert A. Niedt and wife Linda; daughter-in-law Roberta Niedt; as well as his precious grandchildren and their significant others, Benjamin (Julia); Bryan (Meghan); Joshua (Jessica); Bethany (Eric); Christopher; Alexandra; Keri (Matt); and Jamie Leigh (Christopher). Also, his great-grandchildren, Elijah, Maddie, Randy, Ellie, Savannah, Riley, Kylie, James, Hailey, George, and Ava, as well as his extended family of nieces and nephews. Dick’s entire family misses him enormously.
