Born in Bayonne to the late Paul P. and Catherine Zec (nee Sharkey), he was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in West New York, NJ. He met the love of his life, Kathleen Bigley, in the stands during a high school basketball game, and it was love at first sight. He went on to attend Manhattan College where he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree before going to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. Mr. Zec was enlisted for six years, devoting himself to advancement in military affairs. He married the love of his life on Halloween of 1970 and lived in Georgia and El Paso Texas, where they enjoyed some of the best times in their life.
The Zecs moved to Bridgewater before settling in Somerville in 1987. After his active duty with the Army, he then spent twenty years in the Army Reserves, where he taught Nuclear Biological Warfare Protection. Mr. Zec was a Radiology Manager with St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. Even in his retirement, Mr. Zec took up working at UPS where he enjoyed the time making friends and working. He was an active parishioner at The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Somerville where he regularly attended Mass with his wife. He was a devoted family man who loved traveling with his wife and spending quality time with his family. Paul enjoyed American History and was a Civil War enthusiast. He was interested in evolving technology and was a member of the Somerset County Fish And Game Protective Association.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 53 years, Kathleen Zec, his loving children Patrick A. Zec and wife Lauren, and Mary O’Malley and husband Diarmuid, his cherished grandchildren, Hugh, Nora, Michael, Matthew, Caitlin, and Elizabeth, his dear brother Donald M. Zec, as well as his extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from 4:00 to 8:00PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, Somerville.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM.
