Patrick J. McCarren, 90, died on March 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of the late Patrick and Anna McCarren (née Karpinsky). A proud graduate of the Class of 1953, Patrick enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving two years before being honorably discharged as a Second-Class Private. Following his military service, Patrick returned to Staten Island, where he raised his family while working as a lineman for Bell Telephone Labs. Later, he moved to Elizabeth, NJ, and enjoyed a successful career at Macy’s as a Chief Technology Officer.
Patrick met the love of his life, Marie, through mutual friends, and together they shared 40 years filled with adventure and joy. They resided in Scotch Plains for 15 years before retiring to Toms River, where they spent 25 wonderful years together.
An avid sportsman, Patrick stayed active throughout his life, excelling in tennis, golf, hockey, and especially softball. When he wasn’t playing, he was cheering on his beloved New York Rangers, Giants, and Mets.
Patrick and Marie shared a passion for travel, frequently visiting Europe, particularly Italy and Switzerland. They were avid skiers, enjoying trips to Vermont and New Hampshire, and loved vacationing in the Caribbean and along the Jersey Shore, where Patrick could often be found riding the waves on his boogie board. Their favorite destination was Rincón, Puerto Rico, where they spent their winters. This past February, Patrick joyfully celebrated his 90th birthday there, creating cherished memories that will live on forever.
Patrick also found joy in life’s simple pleasures, such as reading the newspaper each morning with his toast and tea or indulging in a tin roof sundae and chocolate-covered almonds. Above all, he loved his family deeply and treasured his role as a devoted father, grandfather (GP), and great-grandfather. The moments he spent with his loved ones were his greatest joy.
Patrick was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Anna, and his son-in-law, Richard. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie, and his children: Patrick (Suzanne), Deborah, Gerard (Karen), Robert (Erin), David, Lauren (Guy), and Lynn. He was a proud grandfather to Gabrielle, Patrick (Rachel), John, Brianna, Charlie, Dylan, Cillian, Melissa (Jordan), David, Joey, Taylor (Jessica), Lauren (Charlie), and James (Nicole), and a cherished great-grandfather to Hallie, Leighton, and Scarlett. He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Patrick’s legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave, Somerville, NJ 08876.
