Nancy Decker, 72, died peacefully on March 12, 2024, after an eight month battle with brain cancer.
Born in Manhattan, New York to the late Timothy and Mary Sweeney (nee Kingston), she was raised in The Bronx, and went on to live in Rhinebeck, where she graduated High School. She met the love of her life, Philip Decker, while living in Rhinebeck where the two were married. They settled to New Jersey in 1973 and resided in Bordentown, before moving to Somerville in 1977 where they raised their family.
Mrs. Decker worked part time as an administrator with the Somerset County Probation Office in Somerville before working with Mullin & Lonergan Associates. She devoted her life to being a wife, mother, and Nana to her beloved family. Nancy never missed a sporting event for her family and if she was in the crowd, she was your biggest fan. She was a lifelong NY Yankee baseball fan and an avid reader, greatly enjoying her book clubs’ meetings. She travelled the world with Philip and their friends including most of Europe, cruises to many destinations, but most especially Ireland. However, her most favorite place to be was with her family at Silver Beach on the Jersey Shore every summer for forty years.
Nancy was known for her thoughtfulness, she remembered everyone’s birthdays, anniversaries, and loved to send a card. She assured that an opportunity wasn’t missed with a card for some encouragement, support, or acknowledgement, all with a handwritten message from her heart. Nancy was well organized, assuring the whole family was aware of everything and didn’t miss a special event.
She was preceded in death by her dear brother, Timothy Sweeney.
Surviving are her beloved husband of fifty two years, Philip Decker, her loving children Sean Decker and wife Jessie, Colleen Runyon and wife Dianne, and Stephen Decker, her eight cherished grandchildren, Anna, Hannah, Katie, Maeve, Riley, Avery, Lily, and T.J., her dear siblings Laura Espie and husband John, and Marybeth Sweeney and husband Charlie Cuyler, her dear nieces and nephews, extended family, and community friends.
