Marion B. Norton

d. January 17, 2015

Age 93
Formerly of Somerville

Marion Kathryn Ballentine Norton could trace her roots in Somerville, NJ, back to 1702. With these roots came her membership in the Somerville History Club which was established in 1902. Marion’s membership ended in 2002 with her move out of the county. In the SHC membership book you could find her favorite and often used saying “the first hundred years are the hardest.”

A 1938 graduate of Somerville High School Marion went on to get her R.N. from St. Barnabas School of Nursing in Newark, NJ, in 1942. When she retired in 1987 as the director of the Somerset County Tuberculosis Control Center there were “zero” active cases in the county. We can all remember the “tine” tests we took in the 1960’s and the prevalence of TB in our society at the time. Zero active cases was quite an accomplishment. In 2002 Marion moved to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls and loved it until the day she died.

Marion was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Kathryn Ballentine and her husband, James Joseph Norton. She is survived by her son, James, and his wife, Chrystal, daughter, Kathleen Curtis, and her husband, Ken, two grandchildren, Amy Husken and her husband, Paul, and Tim Curtis and his wife, Diane, four granddaughters, Emily, Julia and Hayley Husken and Christina Curtis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Tuesday, January 20, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at church cemetery. Visitation will begin 8am before Mass on Tuesday at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. In lieu of flowers please send a contribution to the charity of your choice.
