Maria Amparo Valenzuela, 87, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025.
Born in Guatemala, she moved to the United States in 1973. Maria initially settled in New York with Clare and her family, where she lived for many years before relocating to New Jersey in the early 2000s to be closer to the children. She remained there for the rest of her life.
A devout Catholic, Maria’s faith was the cornerstone of her existence. As a dedicated member of Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ, she found great solace and strength in her beliefs.
Maria dedicated herself selflessly to others, always willing to ease another’s burdens. She took great pride in her home, lovingly tending to her garden and meticulously preparing donations to ensure only the best reached those in need. Her heartfelt commitment to improving lives left an enduring impact on her community.
Maria is survived by her three children: Otto Meija of Jackson Heights, NY; Shenny Meija & Sunny of Jackson Heights, NY; and Zoila Meija of Antigua, Guatemala. She also leaves behind three grandchildren—Susan, Javier, and Andrew—as well as three great-grandchildren: James, Kevin, and Irene Meija in addition to all her brothers and sisters.
Maria also leaves behind her extended family, including Kevin & Alicia Obser, Marcus & Valeria Obser, and Erika & Tom Papp, and their children, Liam, Collin, Chloe, Tristan, Luke, Robert, Kiera and Andrew.
Visitation will be held from 9:30AM to 10:30AM on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
Interment will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.
