Obituary

Leonard L. Wirtanen, 74, died peacefully on February, 26, 2026.

Born in Brooklyn, New York to the late George Wirtanen and Marion Boyanowski (nee Dingfelder), he was raised in Somerville, and was a graduate of Somerville High School.

He met the love of his life, Kathy Koziel, on a blind date. The two were married and settled in Middlesex where they raised their family. Len was a devoted husband and father and found joy spending quality time together.

Mr. Wirtanen began his IT career with GHI in New York, before working for Toys R Us in Parsippany. He eventually worked for Macys in East Brunswick where he retired in 2012.

In his retirement, he was promoted to his greatest role of all, Pop-Pop, at the birth of his first grandchild in 2012. This was a position he took seriously and gave him the greatest joy. He spent the next decade devoting himself to his five grandchildren and cherished every moment together, creating memories to last a lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John Wirtanen.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 51 years, Kathy Wirtanen, his loving children, Matthew Wirtanen and Jessica Spinner and husband Benjamin, his adored grandchildren Ethan, Julian, Owen, Eleanor, and Aspen, his beloved dog Grady, and as well as his extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations of "Hope in a Bag" care packages for cancer patients, in honor of his grandson, Ethan’s mitzvah project-lovingly dedicated to him as he bravely fought cancer for many years. Suggested items include comfy socks, a soft blanket, books, granola bars, and crossword puzzle books. Care packages may be dropped off at Temple Beth-El, 67 US-206, Hillsborough Township, NJ 08844, and/or contacting Kathy or Jessica.

There will be no formal services. However, the family will be hosting a luncheon at a later date to celebrate his life, and all who knew and loved him are welcome to join.
