Obituary

Leonard Leo Wastack, "Len", 92, died peacefully on February 23, 2026.

Born in his grandmother’s house to the late Leo and Della Waszczak, he was raised in the Austin Heights section of Old Forge, Pennsylvania and was a graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1951.

Mr. Wastack went on to attend Lackawanna Business College in Scranton, earning an associate degree in accounting, and later pursued additional accounting coursework at Rutgers University.

In 1953, he began his professional career with Johns Manville, serving as general accounting supervisor. It was there that he met Barbara Dancak, the love of his life and future wife.

Mr. Wastack proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, completing assignments at Fort Benning and Fort Knox. During his service, he ran the sports program at Fort Knox, worked in the personnel department, and was promoted to Sergeant. He also continued his commitment to service as a member of the Army Reserve.

Following his military service, he resumed his accounting career at Johns Manville and was employed there for another 9 years. He then spent nearly the next 20 years with RCA in Bridgewater, where he worked on the Trident submarine program, a cornerstone of US and UK strategic nuclear deterrence. Len later worked for Container Corporation of America in North Branch and the Bridgewater Credit Union. His professionalism, integrity, and steady leadership defined a career spanning decades.

A longtime resident of Somerville, he first lived there from 1953 to 1960, then returned in 1967, where he raised his family on Walnut Street and lived there for 53 years. In 2020, he and Barbara moved to Wall Township, where he lived until 2026. A memorial bench will be placed in his honor in Walck Park across from his longtime Walnut Street home.

Beyond his career, Mr. Wastack was deeply involved in athletics and community life. From 1964 to 1989, he served as a football statistician for Princeton University, where he also assisted in recruiting student-athletes. He played volleyball for the Somerset Messenger-Gazette team in the Somerville Recreation League from 1952 to 1972, winning numerous championships, and played softball for the Somerset Trust Company in the 1960s, earning a league championship in 1962.

Len volunteered extensively throughout his life, including with the Somerville Elks, the Special Olympics, and the Far Hills Race Meeting. He loved swimming at the YMCA and enjoyed making friends there. For nearly 60 years, he was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Bound Brook. He was also the founder of the Gentlemen’s Club at Sunrise of Wall, where he fostered friendship and camaraderie in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Wastack, and granddaughter Brittany Lyn.

Surviving are his loving daughters Linda Wastack and Sharon Joyce and husband Bob, his cherished grandchildren Tyler and Brianna Joyce, his dear sisters Edna Hermann and Helen West and husband Brock, as well as his extended family and community friends.
