Age 86
Mr. Joseph Anthony O'Neill died August 8, 2013 at his residence in Vero Beach, Florida.
Joe was born in Elmhurst, New York, on September 1, 1926, the son of Francis Xavier and Margaret O’Neill.He attended Fordham Preparatory in New York, graduating in 1944.He enlisted in the US Navy and served from September, 1944 until he was honorably discharged in 1946.During that time he served aboard the minesweeper USS Staff in the Pacific theater and was involved in combat operations during the battle of Okinawa.Achieving the rank of Radarman Second Class, his service medals include the Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars.
After the war, he attended Fordham University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry.He married the love of his life, Patricia Harrington in 1951.They had four children together and remained joyfully married for 62 years until his passing.
Joe was a devout Catholic all of his life and a loving husband, father and family man.He served actively
in Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, NJ.
An avid sailor all his life he enjoyed sailing with his family
on Chesapeake Bay.A world traveler, he and his wife Pat enjoyed travel to many of the world’s continents.
He retired from Exxon Chemical Company in 1988
after nearly 30 years of service. Joe and Pat later moved to Vero Beach, Florida where they were members of the
Moorings Club and were active members on Holy Cross Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife Patricia Mary, his daughter Kathleen, son Joseph Jr. and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren He was preceded in death by his son Hugh and his daughter Mary.
SERVICES: Visitation will be held at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ on
Wednesday, August 14 at 9:30AM, with funeral mass following at Immaculate Conception Church at 11:00AM. Interment to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Somerville, NJ.
