John S. Vara, 86, of Bridgewater died on April 20, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was born on August 6, 1929 in Blakely, Pa to the late Joaquin and Helen (Sislo) Vara.

John proudly served in the U.S. Air Force, participating in the Berlin Airlift and achieving the rank of Sergeant. After completing his service, he moved to Kearny and worked as a technician whileearning a degree in Electrical Engineering at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Upon receiving his degree, he worked for over 30 years as an Electrical Engineer at RCA, Harris and GE.In retirement, he pursued his love of flying, obtaining his private pilot license, and flying for over a decade.

John was a communicant and active member of Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, a Eucharistic Minister and volunteer for various other ministries.

He is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years Anita (Koerner) Vara, his children and their spouses Mary Beth (Keith) Masur, John (Christine Geisler) Vara, Teresa (Tim)Conklin and 13 grandchildren (Patrick, Andrew, and SeanMasur, Jessica, Samantha, Marissa, Danielle, and Grace Vara, Claire, James, Meg, Ryan, and Kevin Conklin), his sister Debi(Art) Graf, and his brother William (Ann) Zacheiss. He is predeceased by his sister, Dorothy (William) Kenely.

Visitation: Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville, NJ, Sunday, Apr 24, 2-5 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at the Immaculate Conception Church, Monday, Apr 25 at 9:30 am.
