Jean D. Lucas, 92, of Somerville, N.J., died at home, on Saturday, June 11, 2022, the birthday of her late husband, who was the love of her life. Known from childhood as “Queenie”, she became a beautiful and regal woman of great Catholic faith. Born at Bound Brook Hospital to Raffaela and Frank Dallessio, Mrs. Lucas grew up in Somerville. She was a 1947 graduate of Somerville High School, and a 1951 graduate of Caldwell College, the first member of her family to attend college. At the time of her marriage, she was an editor of House and Garden magazine. She commuted by train from Somerville to New York City, part of a lifetime of enjoyment offered by the greatest city in the world . After getting married, and residing in Bernardsville, N.J., and Lawrence Township, N.J., she received her teaching certificate from Trenton State College. She taught First Grade in the Lawrence Township Public School System. After returning to Somerville in 1967, she taught Kindergarten for nineteen years at Immaculate Conception Grammar School, before retiring. If you were a student in one of Mrs. Lucas’ ICS Kindergarten classes, a special and unique bond of love was formed which lasted a lifetime. With the exception of 1958-1967, she was a lifelong resident of Somerville, and a lifelong parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Parish, Somerville. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, the Honorable David G. Lucas, J.S.C. (ret’d), her sisters Ann (Al) Macchi, Mary Dallessio, and Frances Dallessio, her brother Sonny (Mary) Dallessio, her cousins Tom (Rose) Dallessio, Ann Dallessio and Dick Dallessio, her nephews Albert Macchi and Richard Dallessio, and her nephew in-law Bill Malloy. She is survived by her son, David (Tracy), her grandchildren Morgan (Claire), Kevin, and Ann, her nieces Marian (Don) Thompson, Betty Malloy, and Patty (Frank) Zalewski, her nephews Frank (Kelly) Dallessio, Tom (Kathy) Dallessio, Joe Dallessio, Jerry Dallessio, her niece in-law Lisa Macchi, nine great nieces, four great nephews, a great great niece, a great great nephew, many extended family and close friends, and approximately one thousand former students who loved her, and she loved them. Family and friends are welcome to gather on Thursday, June 16 from 4:00 to 8:00PM the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 17 at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, N.J. Family and friends are welcome to gather beginning at 9:00AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, N.J.
