John “Jack” Irey, 78, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on January 8, 2024.
Born in Somerville to the late John-Henry and Florence Irey, he was raised in Branchburg. Jack was a graduate of Somerville High School, where he met the love of his life, Susan Connelly, at a football game. The two were married February 5th, 1966 and settled in Bridgewater where they started their family. Mr. Irey worked at Johns-Manville briefly before being drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. During the sacrifice of service, Jack fought valiantly and was exposed to Agent Orange which forever changed his life.
Mr. Irey was elated to go home to his beloved wife and son and begin life together. He started working for Van Doren Oil company as a truck driver where he spent almost fifty years. He was devoted to his four boys growing up, always attending every sport and school event, something he was proud to continue doing when he became a grandpa. He was an active member, volunteer, and chaplain for American Legion post 12 of Somerville and belonged to VFW Post 2290 of Manville, he was a true patriot and proud to have served his country. His family meant everything to him, and he loved to participate in all they did, even doing an over 40 BMX run with his kids.
He was preceded in death by his cherished granddaughter Jennalyn, his dear daughter in law Denise and loving sister in law Lynn.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Susan Irey, his loving sons John Irey and wife Jennifer, Eric Irey and wife Stacey, Christopher Irey and Craig Irey, his cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Breanna, Ian, Julia, and CJ, his great grandchildren Brandon Jr. and Bently, his brother Brian Irey of Whiting, as well as his extended family and dear friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00PM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 60 Maple St, Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:30AM.
Entombment will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bridgewater, NJ
