Hugh T. McAleavy of Somerville, NJ passed away on June 2, 2018. Hugh was born and raised in Somerville. He was a graduate of Immaculata High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University. At Seton Hall, he was a cadet in the Army ROTC program and he received the award for the most outstanding cadet in his company during graduation ceremonies at Fort Knox, KY. Upon his graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

After his military service, Hugh served as a police officer in his hometown, retiring in 2001. During his career he was twice awarded the Medal of Valor for actions taken in the line of duty. After his retirement from law enforcement, he worked with his beloved partner Jake, as an explosive detection canine handler for MSA Security in New York City. Hugh was an active member of the American Legion Post 12 in Somerville, the Fraternal Order of Eagles - Aerie Lodge 2137 and an Exempt Member of the Somerville Fire Department Lincoln Hose Company #4.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his former wife Noreen McAleavy, his son Hugh T. McAleavy Jr. and wife Tina, daughters Carra Henderson and husband James, Meghan McAleavy and husband Robert Ryan, his grandchildren Nora Henderson, Emma McAleavy, and Michael H. McAleavy, and his brother Francis P. McAleavy III. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Emily and Frank McAleavy, Jr.

Visiting hours from 5pm-8pm on Tuesday, June 5, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Wednesday, June 6, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Hugh T. McAleavy's name to the Immaculate Conception School Scholarship Fund, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville, NJ 08876.
