Age 95
Bridgewater

Herbert Arnold (Herb), resident of Bridgeway Nursing and Rehabilitation Home, Bridgewater, passed away on Thursday, October 4, at the age of 95. Herb previously resided at The Chelsea Assisted Living in Bridgewater. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary. Herb and Mary were long-time residents of Somerville, NJ. and members of St Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in Raritan, NJ.

Herb’s surname was Aronowitz. He spent his early years in Rahway, NJ with Frank, his father, Rose, his stepmother and Florence, his sister. Ida Applebaum Aronowitz, Herb’s mother died when he was an infant. As a young man Herb enjoyed cycling, swimming and dancing (it is believed that he met Mary at a dance in South River). He served in the Army as a Medical aidman. He learned butchering, the family business, from his father, but Herb did not go into the business.

Herb’s vocation was public service for the federal government (he served for over 30 years). His avocation, however, was art. Herb was a talented artist, cartoonist and wood-worker. He delighted his family with drawings, doll houses, scrapbooks and painted pumpkins (before they were a thing).

Herb loved birds, trains and music. His bird houses were unique, and his bird feeders were always crowded withneighborhood birds. His train layout was intricate and a magnet for his nieces and nephews. His record collection was well worn and well organized.

At the Chelsea assisted living facility he was counted upon to create decorations and posters for activities and social events. After his wife died he was also a sought-afterdance partner.

Herb will be lovingly remembered by his sister in-law, Elsie Zimmitti, and his nieces and nephews, Pamela Z. Gendlek, Betty Zimmitti, Nanciann and John Kruse, Carla and Douglas Larson, James Zimmitti, Clare and Erik Zimmitti, Ilaine Lapidus, Michael Lapidus, Ivan and Jenny Lapidus, Francie Schesinger, Nora Beth and Michael Levyas well as many grandnieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 11, from 3 to 7 pm at the Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville, NJ.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Friday, October 12, 2018, at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 45 Anderson Street, Raritan. NJ
