Helen M. Canavan, wife of the late Robert F. Canavan, died September 14. Mrs. Canavan was born in Brooklyn, NY and resided in Somerville before moving to Bridgewater in 1957. She was a graduate of St. Brendan Diocesan High School, Brooklyn, NY, St. John's University, NY with a BA degree in English and then received her New Jersey Teaching Certificate from Seton Hall University.

Her employment career began with NJ Bell in Bound Brook and Somerville and continued in Education as a teacher with St. Joseph School, Raritan and then retiring in 1991 after 20 years as an English Teacher for Eisenhower Middle School in Bridgewater.

Mrs. Canavan volunteered for the Cub Scouts, a CCD instructor, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County and the Visiting Nurses Association of Somerset Hills and was a long time member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville as well as the Rosary Altar Society there.

Along with her husband, Robert, she was predeceased by her parents Edward F. McNamara and Agnes V. (Kettle) McNamara, her siblings Mary T. Fitzgerald and the Reverend Fr. John T. McNamara and her grandson Kevin Canavan. Surviving are her sons Robert T., his wife, Barbara, Richard M., his wife Kathleen and Matthew J., his wife Joi and grandchildren Bryan, Jessica, Kelly and Elizabeth Canavan.

​Visiting hours from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, September 17, at the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30am on Monday, September 18, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville. Interment to follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Bridgewater.
