Gladys I. Shanahan died August 9 at her home in Bridgewater. Mrs. Shanahan was born in Bound Brook and resided in Bridgewater for almost 50 years. She was very active in her community, serving as a volunteer at the Somerset Medical Center for 25 years, a 4H Leader, a Girl and Boy Scout Leader and a Literacy Volunteer. Her hobbies included playing bridge in local clubs and travelling worldwide. Her husband, Charles Richard "Dick" Shanahan predeceased her in 1999. Surviving are her two sons, Richard Jr. of Somerville and Kevin (his wife Virginia) Shanahan of Flemington and her daughter Kathleen Shanahan of Lake Zurich, IL.. Eight grandchildren, Laura Rickets, Katie Metzler, Kevin Jr., Timothy and Molly Shanahan, Zachary, Scott and Shanah Slade. Four great grandchildren Ceili, Gabriel, Benjamin and Noah Rickets. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30am on Monday, August 13 at St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine St., Flemington. Interment to follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Somerville. Visiting will precede the Mass on Monday in the chapel of the church beginning at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Shanahan's name to American Cancer Society, Somerset Unit, PO Box 1918, Morristown, NJ 07962-1918.
