Gerald E. "Jerry" Gell, 91, went home to Jesus, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and devotion to his family, friends, and passion for sports.
Born in Rochester, NY, Jerry moved to Syracuse as a baby and spent most of his life there before retiring. He attended Eastwood High School, where he was a standout athlete, excelling in basketball and golf. It was during these years that he met the love of his life, Rita. They were just 16 years old and remained together for an incredible 71 years.
In 1953, Jerry and Rita married, and just ten days later, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served for two years before returning home, where he began working at Spaulding Metals Company. Thereafter, Jerry began his sales career in floor covering, then joined North Syracuse Sales in 1980, which he operated for 20 years.
Jerry's love for sports never waned. He played recreational basketball well into his 50s. Golf, however, was his true lifelong passion. A respected figure in the Syracuse golf community, he won many tournaments, including winning multiple member guests with friends, and Syracuse Herald-Journal tournament twice, the City Amateur Championship three times, and was inducted into New York’s Golf Legends Hall of Fame in 2004. His lowest recorded score was 66 at Drumlins Country Club, a testament to his skill and dedication.
Above all, Jerry’s greatest joy was his family. After retiring, he and Rita embraced adventure, living in Sarasota, FL, for eight years, then Ocala for 16 years, followed by five years in Virginia, and finally settling in New Jersey. Through every move, he remained a devoted husband, father, and friend, known for his kindness, humor, and unwavering support.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents Earl Gell, and Dorothy (nee Knapp) and Roger Young (Stepfather).
Surviving is his loving wife, Rita; his cherished daughters, Kathy, Nancy, and Mary; his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and David; his nephew, Thomas; his sister-in-law, Joan; his beloved four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Jerry’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and an endless competitive spirit—whether on the course or in life. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those who were lucky enough to know him.
