George Louis Ziegler, 89, died peacefully on March 20, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Newark to the late George and Zita Ziegler, he was a graduate of Irvington High School. He then attended Rutgers University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Arts of Sciences. While in school, he worked at Pabst Brewing Company in Newark and American Gypsum. He then met and married the late Gloria Gollhardt. After their wedding, the couple moved to Georgia where he served his country in the United States Army as a Reserve Commission Officer - Second Lieutenant. Moving back to New Jersey the couple bought their first home in Piscataway and their first business - Town Tavern in Bound Brook. After starting their family, they moved to Bridgewater, and several years later bought Ziggy's Place, also in Bridgewater.
He was an avid sports enthusiast and could frequently be found watching or listening to all types of games, from collegiate to professional. George was a former member of the Somerville Elks 1068 and the Knights of Columbus, Somerville Council 1432. He was a long time communicant of The Church of The Immaculate Conception in Somerville. George’s greatest gift in life was his family. He was a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who enjoyed the quality time spent together creating memories that will last a lifetime.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria Ziegler in 1989, his brother Allen Ziegler in 2009, and his dear son Michael J. Ziegler just last year.
Surviving are his life companion, Alyce Hagerman, his loving daughter Laura Ziegler, dear daughter-in-law Janet Ziegler, his cherished grandchildren, Stephen and wife Samantha Ziegler, Timothy and wife Jennifer Ziegler, and Kathryn Ziegler, his legacy in his great-grandchildren Becket Ziegler and Veronica Ziegler, his son-in-law Frank Liebel, his sister-in-law Karen Gollhardt, his three nieces, one nephew, extended family, and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00PM on Friday, March 24, 2023, at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00AM on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 8:00AM.
