George Riehman

April 19, 1940 — March 16, 2025

George Riehman, 84, died on March 16, 2025.

Born in Bound Brook to the late Hugo and Katherine Riehman (nee Schofield), a lifelong resident of Somerville, NJ, George graduated from St. Peter's High School in New Brunswick in 1958. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 and continued his service in the National Reserves until 1965.

Following his military service, George dedicated his career to land surveying, working for Bridgewater Township from 1976 to 2005 while also running his own land survey company until 2022. A devout Catholic, he was a longtime parishioner of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where he served as an usher for over 40 years.

George had a deep commitment to his community, coaching Little League baseball in the 1970s and serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Somerville Engine Co. #1 for over 60 years. Additionally, he was a member of the Bridgewater Rescue Squad, the American Legion Post 12, and the Somerville Elks. In his later years, he dedicated much of his time to volunteering at the Steeplechase Cancer Center and the VA Hospital in Lyons, where he found immense fulfillment in assisting veterans and those in need. His generosity and willingness to give back to others were unmatched, making a lasting impact on countless lives.

More than just a volunteer, George was a true pillar of the Somerville community. He was a familiar face at local events, a steadfast presence at town gatherings, and a man who always had time to lend a helping hand. Whether he was assisting neighbors with surveying needs, cheering on the local Little League teams, or sharing stories of Somerville’s past, George’s deep-rooted love for his hometown was evident. He had an incredible ability to connect with people of all walks of life, making everyone feel valued and heard. His dedication and selflessness earned him the respect and admiration of generations of residents who considered him not just a friend, but a cornerstone of the town’s history.

A passionate sports fan, George enjoyed cheering for the New York Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, watching horse races, and immersing himself in history and military documentaries on the History Channel. He was often seen around Somerville on beautiful days, enjoying walks with his beloved dog, Charlie. He also enjoyed weekly coffee gatherings with friends at the Hoagie Hut.

Above all, George was a devoted family man who cherished his role as a father, brother, and uncle. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his children, siblings, nieces, and nephews, creating lasting memories through family gatherings, celebrations, and shared laughter. Whether it was offering wisdom and support, attending family events, or simply enjoying a conversation over a home-cooked meal, George’s love for his family was evident in everything he did. He was the heart of family gatherings and a source of strength, always ensuring that those around him felt loved and supported.

He was predeceased by his parents, Hugo and Katherine; his brothers, John and Robert; and his sister, Sally. George is survived by his beloved children, sons George and Eric, daughter Laura, and stepson Patrick; his brothers, Hugh, Jim, and Tom; his sister, Katherine; and his loving 26 nieces and nephews, who will all deeply miss him.
