Evelyn Gaston Van der Veer, life long resident of Somerville, NJ, died peacefully at her home on July 27, 2026 at the age of 100.

“Ebbie” was born in Somerville on November 6, 1925 to Hugh and Elizabeth (Dodd) Van der Veer. She graduated from Somerville High School (1943) and Wheaton College (1947) with a BS in Biology. Following graduation, Ebbie returned to Somerville and worked for Ortho Pharmaceuticals. In the 1950’s she began working for the Raritan Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, retiring in 1990 as Executive Director . During her tenure, her dedication and commitment benefited numerous Somerset County residents.

In addition to her community service, Ebbie was known for her passion for horses. One of her great achievements was starting a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with disabilities. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, swimming, her church community and most of all, her family and many friends. She had a joyful life full of generosity and kindness.

Ebbie is survived by her nephews Hugh Thompson, Jim Thompson and Lin Van der Veer, her nieces Evie Thompson and Ginny Thompson and her many god children. She is predeceased by her sister Julia Thompson, her brothers Hugh and Lindsley Van der Veer and her nephew Hugh Van der Veer lll.

Memorial service will be held at 1:00PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.
