Edward G. Sockler, 85, passed away June 17th, 2015. Ed was born on June 2nd, 1930 in Newark, New Jersey the son of of the late Anton and Estelle Sockler. After graduating Columbia High School in 1948 in Maplewood, NJ Ed then went on to attend Alfred University in New York for two years and then was drafted into the Korean War and served from 1951-1953. After his service in the US army he went to Cornell University where he graduated with Honors in a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. He then worked in the Insurance industry and retired as a VP of Crum and Forster in 1991. He then started his consulting company in insurance, Sockler & Associates. Throughout Ed’s life he has volunteered at the Somerville Elks Lodge and been an active and devout member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Somerville, as an usher and a lector. Ed was also a 25 year member of the Loyola Retreat House in Morristown. Ed enjoyed hiking, gardening, swimming and spending time with his family and grandchildren. His brother, Anton Jr. predeceased him. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Rose, his sister Estelle Sockler, his son, Peter (Gizelle) Sockler, daughter, Paula DeLaurentiis, and five grandchildren Peter Jr., Patrick, Christopher, Alexander and Victoria. And two great-grandchildren, Shaun and Uriah. The visitation will be held on Friday, June 19th, form 3-5 and 7-9 PM at Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday June 20 at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville followed by final prayers at Somerset Hills Mausoleum Chapel, Mt. Airy Rd., Basking Ridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ed's memory to the Immaculate Conception Church or Somerville Elks Handicapped Children's Center.
