Born in Plainfield to the late Dr. James A. and Dorothy M. McGonnell (née Will), Doreen was raised in Watchung and was a 1972 graduate of Watchung Hills High School, where she was a co-captain of the drill team. As a camp counselor with Watchung Recreation she found a joy for doing crafts, something that sparked a creative flair that lasted into her adulthood.
After graduating from the University of Bridgeport, Doreen went on to become a Registered Dental Hygienist, a Clinical Instructor at Union County College, and a member of the National Education Association and the Dental Hygiene Association. She was a longtime Realtor and Relocation Specialist. She was a resident of Hillsborough before relocating to Toms River.
She had a love for the beach, especially her home in the Outer Banks. Aunt Do was a super aunt, always supporting her nieces and nephew and spending time together whenever possible. She cherished watching them grow up and become parents themselves.
She was preceded in death by her brother, James J. McGonnell.
Surviving are her sisters, Kathleen Berger and Karen [Randy] Krater, longtime partner John Tornstrom, nieces and nephew David [Vanessa], Jessica [Kenny], Maggie, Janet [Jeff], and Katie, and great-nieces and nephews Jaice, Valentina, Alessandra, and Grayson.
