Sylvia (Joyce) Foo-Ying, 80, of Whitehouse Station, NJ died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016. Sylvia was born in 1936 in Guyana, where she grew up. She had also been a resident of Somerville, NJ for about 30 years. She worked for 21 years in packaging at Ortho McNeil Pharmaceutical in Raritan, where she made many lifelong friends.

Sylvia was a devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, auntie, friend and cousin. She was a fireplug filled with energy, hilarity and a certain wildness. She was always welcoming and had warm food at the ready for anyone who showed up unexpectedly at her doorstep. She loved life. And life—plants, critters and people—loved her back. She was a strong woman who faced every challenge that a human life can have with fearlessness and supreme courage. She will be missed immensely by all she touched.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 59 years, Alfred; five children, Debra (J.D.), Audrey (Edward), Sandy (William), Carl (Josie), Tricia; and one grandchild, Taylor.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 4 to 7 pm at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue in Somerville. A Memorial Eucharist: A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Sylvia begins at 10 am on Friday, Dec. 9 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 158 West High Street in Somerville.
