Carroll Lloyd Wilson, 86, died peacefully on September 14, 2023.
Born in Manchester, Jamaica, to the late James Forest and Ivy Mullins Wilson, his family moved to Portland, Maine where he was a graduate of Portland High School. Mr. Wilson went on to graduate from the University of Maine. Following graduation, he moved to Brooklyn, NY. He earned his Master’s of Arts degree from Newark State College. He began his teaching career at Maxson Middle School in Plainfield, NJ. Carroll was introduced to another teacher, Ms. Barbara Jones via a mutual friend. The two fell in love and were married in 1967 and settled in Hillsborough, NJ in 1970 where they raised their family.
Mr. Wilson went on to become a Professor and English Department Chair at Raritan Valley Community College. During his career at RVCC, Mr. Wilson was awarded a Paul Robeson Fellowship to study the life and times of the legendary scholar, artist and athlete with the goal of encouraging multicultural and interdisciplinary study of history. He developed and taught the first African American Literature courses at RVCC. He was an advisor to the Black Student Union and advocated for the advancement in higher education for its students. His passion in life were his children and grandchildren. He was active in the community volunteering his time as a Cub master for the Cub Scouts and Recreation Soccer Coach in Hillsborough. Carroll had an artistic side that included photography, chalk drawing, poetry writing, and gardening. He ran the New York City Marathon and stayed in shape most of his life.
Surviving are his beloved wife Barbara Wilson, his loving children Mark Wilson and wife Adana, Eric Wilson and wife Kathleen, and Ellen Wilson and husband Vernon Ghee, his cherished grandchildren, Makenzie, Elmarko, Rylie, Hope, Gavin, Cooper, Grayson, and Wynn, his dear siblings, Thelma, Elgitha, Warren and wife Cindy, his many nieces,nephews, extended family and friends.
Family and friends are welcome to gather for a memorial visitation from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ.
