Bernard J. Sloan, husband of the late Helen (Callaghan) Sloan, died September 15 at home. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and was so proud of it. He later became a resident of Somerville for 50 years. He was the Manager of Port Newark Marine Terminals for the Port Authority of NY/NJ , retiring after a 40 year career. A Navy Veteran of WWII, he served in the Philippines during their liberation. He received his BS & MBA from New York University.


Barney, as he was fondly known, was an Irish Catholic through and through having been a steadfast parishoner at the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville. He was a Charter member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians where he once served as the Grand Marshall for the AOH parade in Somerville. He was also a life member of the Somerville Elks and The Knights of Columbus. He devoted many hours to various charitable organizations and community events. Barney had many friends and was well known for his wit and generosity.
He was predeceased by his sisters Patricia Farrell and Marie Cassidy. Surviving are his children Bernard (wife Jeannine), Maureen Kennedy (husband Bob), Peter (wife Mary), Hugh (wife Kathy) and Eileen Colangelo (husband Ron); his grandchildren Matthew, Katie, Brian, Alli, Megan, Nick, Steven and Shannon; a brother Thomas Sloan (wife Helen) and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Monday, September 19 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville. Visiting hours from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Sunday, September 18 at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to Immaculata High School Foundation, 240 Mountain Ave., Somerville, NJ 08876 or Jack's Kids, c/o the Somerville Elks Lodge # 1068, 375 Union Ave., Bridgewater, NJ 08807
