Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi, 69 passed away on Thursday evening November 10th. Assemblyman Biondi was with his family at the time of his death. Born in Newark in 1942, Assemblyman Biondi was raised in Union and later moved to Hillsborough where he resided for thirty five years. His family, community service and politics were the cornerstones of his life. Assemblyman Biondi was a devoted husband to his wife Joan of 47 years two children, Jennifer and Peter and his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his timeless advocacy on behalf of his constituents in the 16th legislative district and for his desire to help those in need. Assemblyman Biondi served in the United States Army reserves from 1961 until 1967. In 1983, He won his first election to the Hillsborough Township committee and served as Mayor from 1986 – 1993.

In 1994, Assemblyman Biondi was elected to the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders where he served until 1997. In 1997, Assemblyman Biondi began a fourteen year career in the state legislature. He was reelected seven times. During his tenure in the legislature Assemblyman Biondi held numerous positions including Assistant Republican Leader, Deputy Conference Leader and Republican Conference Leader.

In addition to his leadership positions, Assemblyman Biondi also served on the Human Services Committee, the Regulated Professions and Independent Authorities Committee, the Budget Committee and the Transportation Committee. Assemblyman Biondi was dedicated to community service. Over the years, Assemblyman Biondi was active in the following organizations: The Resource Center for Women and their Families, the NJ State Fire Engine Museum, The Otto Gasell Foundation, the Somerset County Governing Officials Association, the Somerset Alliance for the Future, the NJ State PBA, the NJ Conference of Mayors, the NJ Mayors Association, the NJ League of Municipalities, the NJ Board of Recreation Examiners, the NJ Library Association, the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism, Hillsborough/Millstone municipal Alliance Committee, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, the Somerville Elks, the Adult Daycare Center, the Somerset County Federation of Republican Women, the Neshanic Volunteer Fire Company, the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Companies 1, 2 and 3, Hillsborough Youth Services Committee, the Hillsborough Rescue Squad, the Hillsborough Boys Football Association, the Hillsborough Little League, Hillsborough RAIDER Touchdown Association, Jewish Federation, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, March of Dimes and the American Legislative Exchange Council. In addition to his duties, Assemblyman Biondi enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and mentoring young candidates in his hometown of Hillsborough. He believed in the merits of young people getting involved in government in an effort to make their communities a better place.

Assemblyman Biondi is survived by his wife, Joan (formerly Aspinall), his two children Jennifer and Peter, two grandchildren, Jason and Matthew, a sister, Madeline Morehouse of Waretown, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his sister Roseanne Moreno.

Visitation hours will be Sunday, November 13th from 1:00 – 5:00 pm at the Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. Church services will be held on Monday, November 14th at the United Reform Church of Somerville, 100 West Main Street, Somerville. Visitation at the church will be between 11am and noon; the funeral service will follow at noon. A private burial for family members will follow the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be directed to the Resource Center of Somerset, the Neshanic Fire Company or the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Companies 1, 2 & 3.
