Anita L Kavanaugh

Anita L. Kavanaugh, 74, of Somerville, died peacefully at home on July 20, 2023.

Born in Plainfield to the late Patsy and Marion Amato (Bogdan), Anita was raised in Piscataway and was a graduate of Piscataway High School Class of 1967.

She worked at Johns Manville, LabCorp and then IEEE, retiring in 2013. Along the way, Anita fell in love with George Kavanaugh, Jr., and the two were married in 1995. They lived a happy and fulfilled life in Somerville and spent many summers on their boat in Waretown.

Anita cherished spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her incredible joy. She enjoyed watching them participate in their various activities and providing them with an endless love that will last a lifetime.

She shared George’s commitment to supporting veterans, including the members of The American Legion Stevenson D’Alessio Unit 12 and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Anita served as Unit President from 1999 to 2023 and served as County President from 2013 to 2017.

Anita had a giving spirit and often volunteered at the Lyons Veterans Hospital, participated in the Annual Wreaths Across America for deceased veterans buried in Somerville, and led the annual Legion Unit interview and selection of Girls State participants from Somerville’s local high schools.

She was welcomed into heaven by her parents, beloved husband, George Kavanaugh, Jr. and her dear siblings Joseph and Paul.

Surviving are her loving children, Sharon, George III and wife Lisa, Michael and wife Jessica, and Renee and husband Jeff; her adored grandchildren Rebecca, Kayla, Elizabeth, George IV, Tyler, Peyton, and Chase; her brother Patrick; her extended family; and her Legion family.

Anita cared so deeply for the people around her. She was kind and passionate and made an impact on many lives. She will be forever missed.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, from 4:00 to 8:00PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at The Church of The Immaculate Conception, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM.

Interment will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bridgewater.
