Alisia Duma

September 22, 1937 — May 22, 2025

Dr. Alisia Duma, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born in Zhashkiv, Ukraine, to the late Eva Dombrovska and Stanislav Kotovich, Alisia lived a life guided by intellect, purpose, and deep family devotion. She earned her master’s in science degree from Kyiv State University and went on to complete her PhD in astronomy. During her graduate studies, she met Dmytro Duma, a fellow academic who encouraged her scholarly ambitions. Their partnership in both life and learning became a lifelong bond. They married in 1962 and built their life together in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Dr. Duma began her career as a research scientist in astronomy before becoming a professor at the National Agriculture University in Kyiv. She was deeply committed to educating future generations in math and science. Her students remembered her not only for her brilliance, but for her ability to inspire.

After many years traveling between Ukraine and the United States, Alisia and Dmytro eventually settled in New Jersey to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In retirement, she cherished time with her family, especially traveling to be close to her loved ones.

Alisia had a passion for gardening and a talent for knitting. She was an exceptional cook, known especially for her traditional meat jelly, and made every holiday feel special with her thoughtful touches. She loved the ocean and watching the sunset over the water.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Emil Kotovich and Valentin Kotovich.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Dmytro Duma; her children, Irina Zagorovskii and husband Vlad, and Pavlo Duma and wife Lisa; her grandchildren, Tamara and husband Mike, Dimitri, Alexander, and Eric; her great-granddaughters, Maya and Sienna; and many extended family members and friends who will continue to honor her memory.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Avenue, Somerville. A prayer service will begin at 4:00 PM.
